ABOUT ME

Undergraduate degree in biology with an emphasis in microbiology…

That was my college major. Thoughts of medical school were dancing in my head.

Half way through my junior year in college, I got to know people who were in medical school or in an internship or residency. Rubbing shoulders with them convinced me a doctor’s life was not for me.

During my college years, a new computer—with the name “Macintosh”—came on the scene. It was a lot more user-friendly than the DOS computers I’d used. Not long after the Mac’s introduction, the program, “PageMaker”, appeared. I quickly took a liking to the Mac / PageMaker combination. It allowed me to integrate text and graphics without having to use scissors and glue.

Along the way I took one art class to fill a "humanities" requirement.

The class was an introductory photography course. Like many intro classes, we shot black & white film and did our own darkroom work. For that class, my dad let me use his 35mm SLR. I found photography enjoyable and eventually bought my own camera.

After college I worked as an office manager for the periodicals department of a medical library while considering possible career moves. During this time I became more involved with photography. I used it to document back-country hikes and backpack trips. People also started asking me to do portraits. Along the way, I became even more adept at the then-new concept of DTP (Desktop Publishing) and started doing layout and typesetting for small print shops.

My graphic design skills led me to a job in Germany. Living and working there for about 7½ years also helped me become fluent in spoken and written German.

Other than for family photos, I didn’t touch my camera much while in Germany. It was not until I returned to California that I began to seriously use my camera again. The advent of digital cameras has brought photography and graphic design together, making them complementary occupations.

And, when I’m not working?

I can be found outdoors dayhiking, backpacking, or cycling. Indoor activities include reading and making music (guitar & vocals).
