What are stock photographs?

Stock photographs are a collection of preexisting images available for use in creative projects. The types of images available are summarized in a Stock List. Usage of stock photos consists of Licensing Images by a photo buyer for specific uses. Publishers, advertising agencies, graphic artists, and others use stock photographs to fill photographic needs of their creative projects.

When are stock images an appropriate choice?

When…

you need a photograph on a short deadline
the image you need is generic in nature
you want to see a wide variety of creative approaches
you have a large number of individuals who must sign off on the photo approval
your creative project does not have a budget to cover the cost of hiring a photographer

…then stock photographs can save time and money.

However, if you need specific images—such as a product with a logo or an executive portrait at a particular location—then you’ll have to assign the photography.

What is rights-managed (“RM”) licensing?

I license the use of my images to you, so that my work can contribute to the success of your article, advertisement, book, brochure, presentation or website. I do not “sell” the image itself. Instead, you are permitted to use the image for a purpose or series of purposes, for an agreed-upon fee. This is what is known as rights-managed licensing. The negotiation of the rights and fees is between you and me.
